FDA Denies Lycopene Supplement Health Claims

The FDA has denied a petition by supplement maker American Longevity for approval of qualified health claims concerning cancer fighting properties of lycopene, an antioxydant found in red fruits like tomatoes and watermelon. For the FDA’s denial letter, click here.

Update: Over the weekend, LycoRed Natural Products, Ltd. issued a press release entitled FDA Approves Qualified Health Claim on Tomatoes and Tomato Sauces which appears to contradict the FDA denial letter cited above. I will look at it more closely and get back with you about what really happened here…
